What is dramatis personae?

Talking about the works of William Shakespeare one character at a time.

No matter your level of familiarity with Shakespeare’s plays, characters are an accessible and interesting way in. They allow us to talk about the intersection of text and performance, and to explore how understandings of the plays have changed throughout their history.

I hope this newsletter will have interesting insights to offer to students, artists, and fans of Shakespeare alike, as we approach the plays from a new and sometimes unexpected angle.

Who are you?

My name is Hailey, and I have a PhD in Shakespeare and performance. I’ve also worked on productions of Shakespeare’s plays as a researcher and dramaturg at the Globe Theatre and as a freelancer in both the US and the UK. Right now, I work at the University of Roehampton in London as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow.

You can find out more about my work here, or follow me on Twitter at @hbachrach.
